Optimal image size

Before I start creating images for my portfolio, header, blog etc. I'd like to know what is the 'ideal' PROPORTION and SIZE. Can you provide any recommendations on these two things? I want to accommodate for really large screens that are retna...

Also, if i upload large images will it slow down my site? I see you have an adaptive image resizer... does that deal with large images and speed issues?
